Make something personal

Turn a plain jar into a personalised gift

A plain glass jar, your own words in vinyl, and something they love inside. One idea, three ways.

A glass jar with a name on it makes a small, thoughtful gift. You supply the jar. Bessie Boo supplies a custom decal with your own wording, in your choice of font, colour and size.

What you’ll need

From Bessie Boo

Want a picture as well as words? The custom image decal further down can be ordered alongside it.

You’ll supply

  • A glass jar with a smooth, flat area for the decal
  • A tape measure
  • Something to fill it with

These aren’t sold with the decal.

1. Measure the space on your jar

Measure the flat part of the jar where the decal will sit, both across and top to bottom. That tells you which size to choose.

The custom decal comes in squares from 8x8cm up to 20x20cm, a 25x20cm size, or a custom size. Some things to know from the listing:

  • The smaller decals, 8cm and 10cm, fit about 3 to 6 words. For more words, message Fliss about sizing.
  • Initials are made 2.5cm high, up to 3 letters.
  • If you’d like your wording on one line rather than a square, Fliss’s listing points you to her name label listing instead.

2. Choose the words

This is where the gift becomes personal. Here’s one of Fliss’s own jar decals:

Some ideas for three different people, based on jars in the shop:

  • For a teacher: their name and a thank you, filled with sweets.
  • For a dad or grandad: “[Name]‘s Nuts, hands off!”, like the jar above.
  • For a reader: “[Name]‘s TBR”, filled with folded slips of book titles to pick from.

Keep it short enough to read at a glance. The listing photos include a font list and a colour chart, and Fliss has more of both if you message her.

3. Apply the decal

Choose the smoothest, flattest part of the jar, and check the decal is level before it touches the glass.

4. Fill it and look after it

Fill it with whatever suits them: sweets, nuts, biscuits, tea, or notes. The listings say the decals are fine on washable items, but not dishwasher safe, so it’s worth mentioning that when you give it.

Add a picture

For a little picture alongside the words, such as a football or a heart, there’s a custom image decal. Message Fliss first if you’re unsure whether your image will work.

Prefer it ready-made?
